1. It's a fake. It's not a Sony or Sandisk Memory Stick 2. Magic Gate is Not Supported 3. The "fake" memory stick probably appears to work with possibly different performance specifications. 4. The memory stick is then of unknown origin. It may be a factory reject (did it come with Sony packaging?) scooped out of a reject bin or the product of an alternative Memory Stick manufacturer. The usual characteristic of the fake Memory Sticks are: a) They don't support Magic Gate. Many of us would see this as a good thing :-D b) The transfer speeds are lower :-( c) The memory capacity is different from the genuine product. In most cases it's actually slightly MORE. :-) d) Reliability is questionable. :-( I have received reports of Memory Sticks failing during a downgrade, thus producing a brick. e) Much cheaper. Can be purchased at 20% of RRP. :-P Overall, it's probably OK to use provided you apply suitable risk management[addsig]

I'd be interested to know, how many of those who didn't receive the packaging with their Memory Stick.[addsig]
