Check that the spring in the analog stick hasnt come off. When you have pulled the analog stick apart fully, you will see a spring, which should surround the circular part of the analog stick. I had the same problem as you, and thats how I sorted it. If not then, as xaositec said, check the guides are correctly in place.

If you do not have any electrical switch cleaner (cleans switches, contacts etc.), an eraser (rubber) does a great job. It will take off any oxides and muck on the contacts.
If you find that your stick drifts i.e. moves on its own, after fitting a new face plate, shave about 1mm off the post that the screw goes into on the bottom left of the face plate (the one nearest the stick).
Sticks can also be opened up, the tracks cleaned and re-greased using a silicone based grease.[addsig]
