Mmmh - I really hope the crippled memory stick PRO duo capability is a bug that will be fixed soon. In the meantime I might resort to playing MP3 music files on my PRO duo memory, which are freely available from various file sharing services and let my legally obtained ATRAC collection collect dust.

Good job Sony!!!

Yeah that pretty much blows. That page from memorystick.com doesn't explain why the pro duo isn't usable, just says it can't. Still curious if it's a bug in the memory media, Sonicstage or in the PSP firmware. Also want to know if it's the media so I can either hold off on getting a memory stick or not.

Good question. It seems unlikely that the bug is with the PRO memory stick technology - after all ATRAC files are just data stored in memory. But who know how this copyright protection technology works...

Harry Tuttle,
where did you get the information from that the ATRAC support for PRO memory sticks is a bug that will be fixed soon?[addsig]

One thing that is glaring me in the face when I read your post is your type of Memory Stick. I'm going to assume that you're using the 32MB Memory Stick Duo that is included with the PSP. This will, in fact, not work with ATRAC3plus files.[quote]

This is untrue. Im playing ATRAC3plus files on my 32mb packed in Memory Stick Duo as im typing this. all i did was convert my mp3's on Sonicstage 3.0 to ATRAC3plus (64kbps) and transferred it. and it sounds amazing. it rivals 128kbps MP3's easily. if you dont believe me, just look:
I maxed out to 18 ATRAC3plus songs on my 32 mb duo, whereas i could only have 5 or 6 mp3's before.

If it's not the actual memstick pro duo that's in error I'll just go ahead and order one. What else are duo sticks used for? [addsig]

It's seems unlikely to me that the memory stick is buggy. I am more concered if Sony will make an effort to fix the bug. There doesn't seem too many people out there who care if their PSP plays ATRAC or not.[addsig]

Unforutantly no. Either Sony isn't in any rush or they rather people buy those newer 20 gig MP3 players that 'support mp3, wav and wma" while the pic of the thing has "ATRAC Songs" on it's display.[addsig]

My guess is that the crippled ATRAC support is not a bug. The MP3 capability of the PSP makes the PSP a good alternative to the IPOD and various other MP3 players. Full ATRAC support for the PSP would only create unwanted competition for Sony's new hard drive, flash players, and Mini Disc players, which all can play ATRAC.
Sony wants the ATRAC user to buy a PSP AND one of their other portable players.

Further support for my hypothesis that the crippled ATRAC support is not a bug is that the missing ATRAC support is well documented in the manual and at other places and is nowhere mentioned as a bug. This does not smell like a bug.

The crippled ATRAC support might be a smart move from the economic point of view, but it really sucks for the ATRAC user. Sony's policy might not pay off in the long run, since ATRAC already is an "endangered species" among the compression formats and Sony doesn't help ATRAC by not giving full ATRAC support for their PSP.[addsig]

Sorry for not responding again sooner...been gone.

To be more accurate, support for ATRAC on Memory Stick Pro isn't a bug but support that had not been completed yet. It is not a policy or anything. The PSP is just the first device that supported this feature. Support WILL be added with a firmware update on the PSP. It will be here soon...fear not.
