It does, but the newer 40gb doesn't. And now, the 40gb is all that's available. If you have an original PS3 that can play PS2 games, either count yourself lucky, or eBay it for a lot of money! I've seen new 60gb PS3s going for around £500/$1,000 on eBay, as they're so highly sought after.

Well there is a hardware emulation that needs to take place in order to decompress and decrypt a PS2 game thus hardware emulation is needed in order to play PS2 games. PS2 games are decrypted similar to how PSP games are decrypted using the KIRK. In order to quickly decrypt a PS2 game you need the decryption hardware only available on the PS2 and older PS3's, or you need the decryption algorithm the PS2 decryption engine uses to decrypt its games.
As for a Blue-ray less PS3 I would say that it would be a bad move by Sony if they released (assuming of course that it is real) as there have been many advances in Blue-ray which could benefit Sony. A Blue-Ray disc costs as much as a CD or DVD thus the only reason may release a Blue-Ray less PS3 would be to encourage more customers to buy the PS3, thus allowing Sony to make more money and balance their expenses.
If Sony does release a Blue-Ray less PS3, the older PS3 would probably be more like a desktop computer and the new PS3 would probably be more like a hand-held computer, each perform the same function, however, because one is smaller it needs older technology that can easily fit within a smaller space.[addsig]
