Aluminum nitride is a kind of refractory composite ceramic material with hexagonal wurtzite structure. Pure aluminum nitride is blue-white, and aluminum nitride ceramic is usually gray or white.
 
Aluminum nitride is stable at high temperature in inert atmosphere and melts at 2800 °C. It has high thermal conductivity and good electrical insulation, as well as low dielectric constant and dielectric loss. This combination of properties makes it a key advanced material for many applications such as optics, lighting, electronics and renewable energy.
 
The commonly used methods for preparing aluminum nitride are direct nitriding, carbothermal reduction, high energy ball milling, high temperature self-propagating synthesis, chemical vapor deposition and so on.
 
AlN aluminum nitride properties:
Can resist the erosion of most molten metals, especially aluminum, lithium and copper.
It can resist the erosion of most molten salts, including chloride and cryolite.
High thermal conductivity of ceramic materials (second only to beryllium oxide).
High volume resistivity.
High dielectric strength.
It is eroded by acids and bases.
 

Where is Aluminium nitride used?
Aluminum nitride aln is a solid nitride of aluminum. It has high thermal conductivity up to 321 W/(m·K) and is a kind of electrical insulator.
Aluminum nitride is widely used because of its thermal conductivity and often replaces beryllium oxide because of the inherent health risks associated with the use of BeO. More importantly, from a functional point of view, the aluminum nitride cte (thermal expansion coefficient) is significantly lower than that of alumina or beryllium oxide, which allows for the best matching with CTE equivalent silicon-based applications. In addition, aluminum nitride does not react with most process chemicals and gases, which makes it more suitable for use in the semiconductor industry.
