New flexible microprocessor made of ultra-thin two-dimensional material molybdenum disulfide

Flexible electronics can benefit from ultra-thin materials of atomic thickness, which are used for manufacturing microprocessors. Recent breakthroughs have been made in this area by researchers at the Vienna University of Technology, Vienna, and the EU's flagship graphene project. These researchers are expected promote the development of intelligent hardware and applications such as Internet of Things.
"Two-dimensional Material" is a term used to describe a material which can be moved freely (planar movement) in only two dimensions on a non-nanoscale (between 1 and 100 nm), for example graphene or transition metal compounds, such as tungsten dielenide, molybdenum sulfide.
The two-dimensional materials are usually composed of several layers of molecules. Our previous focus was on graphene. In addition to graphene-like materials, transition metal disulfide compound is also a two-dimensional material. The materials are soft, small, light, and of low weight. But they also have excellent semiconductor characteristics. .
Microprocessors form the basis of modern electronics. Microprocessors play a key role in all electronics products.

A microprocessor is a core part of the microcomputer. It consists of a large number of integrated circuits which can read and process instructions.

Thomas Mueller of Vienna's Technical University has been studying two-dimensional material. He believes that materials with two dimensions are the best candidates for manufacturing microprocessors in the future. Molybdenum diulfide, a material composed of molybdenum molecules and sulfur molecules, is only three atoms thick, making it a two dimensional material.

In order to achieve this, he worked with the researchers of Technical University of Vienna as well the EU graphene project's "flagship" project in order to develop a transistor based on the two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide material MoS2. A new type of microprocessor is formed by 115 of these transistors. This kind of microprocessor currently performs one-bit logical operations. It is expected that it will expand in the near future to multi-bit operations.
