Aluminium buyers in the US physical metal market have held off on new orders amid fears of a recession triggered by rising inflation and supply chain crises.

Spot aluminium trading on the market has been suspended in recent weeks, according to industry sources, as uncertainty has increased following the outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.  Even before the war, the aluminium market was suffering from long waiting times and weak demand.

For aluminium buyers, recent poor US economic data have been a big factor in delaying purchases.  Data released last month showed that the ISM manufacturing PMI came in at 57.1 in March, below expectations of 59 and down from 58.6 in February, unexpectedly hitting the lowest reading since September 2020.  This was mainly due to a slowdown in new orders and titanium carbide are expected to increase in the future.

What is Titanium carbide?
Titanium carbide chemical formula is TiC. The molecular weight of titanium carbide is 59.89. Gray metallic face-centered cubic lattice solid. Titanium carbide melting point is 3140 ±90℃. Titanium carbide boiling point is 4820℃ and the relative density is 4.93. The hardness is greater than 9 Mohs.
Titanium carbide is insoluble in water, soluble in nitric acid and aqua regia. It is stable to air when it is lower than 800℃, eroded by air when it is higher than 2000℃, and can react with pure O2 at 1150℃.

What is titanium carbide used for?
Titanium carbide is used to make cemented carbide and as an electrode and abrasive for arc lamps.
Titanium carbide is used to prepare cermet. Titanium carbide is usually used to process steel at high cutting speed because of its wear resistance and high hardness. It is also used as a wear-resistant surface coating for metal parts, such as tool drills and watch mechanisms. Titanium carbide is also used as a thermal insulation coating for re-entry of spacecraft.
Titanium carbide is an important component of cemented carbide and is used as a deoxidizer in steelmaking industry. For example, 7075 aluminum alloy (AA7075) is almost as strong as steel, but weighs 1/3 of steel. Large alloy parts can be welded by using AA7075 rods with TiC nanoparticles without cracks caused by phase segregation.

Titanium carbide vs. Tungsten carbide
The carbide has a Mohs hardness of 8.5 to 9, a melting temperature of 2870°C and a low electrical resistance. it is often used as cutting tool materials, braiding, high hardness armor or armor piercing cores, as well as pointed beads that require high hardness sports equipment parts and atoms. It can also be used as a neutron reflector.
Titanium carbide is lighter and cheaper than tungsten carbide, but it is more brittle in cutting tools.
When titanium carbide is combined with tungsten carbide in sintered cemented carbide tool materials, the tendency of pits in the tool can be reduced.

Titanium carbide Price
The price is influenced by many factors including the supply and demand in the market, industry trends, economic activity, market sentiment, and unexpected events.

The war in Russia and Ukraine is roiling global financial markets. Russia and Ukraine are important commodity suppliers in the world, so their conflict is bound to make a full impact on the global commodity supply. In view of this, the price of the titanium carbide may continue to rise in the future.
