What is Aluminum Silicon Carbide? As is aluminum, the ceramic material silicon carbide, also called steel sand, is widely known. Silicon carbide can be found in grindstones, cutting blades, and grinding wheels. It has a harderness than corundum, but is inferior to boron carbide, cubic boron, and diamond. Its high modulus and thermal conductivity make it a popular choice for composite materials. This is the silicon carbide that is used to make AlSiC (aluminum-silicon carbide) materials. For composite materials, silicon carbide must be very pure to achieve high thermal conductivity.
