Titanium aluminum carbon, also called titanium aluminum carbide is a type of grain refiner developed in the past 20 years. Titanium carbide is part of the Max-phase ceramics family. In the oxidation procedure of titanium aluminum carburide (Ti3AlC2) the selective oxidation Al can create a continuous Al2O3 protection film. The experimental results show that titanium aluminum carbonide (Ti3AlC2) exhibits excellent thermal cycling stability, and the oxide films generated are compact, well combined, and do not peel off. The oxide film of Titanium Silicon Carbide (Ti3SiC2), at high temperature, is divided into layers. The outer layer of the film is TiO2, while the inner layer contains a combination of SiO2 with TiO2.
The Al in MAX phase in the Ti-Al-C System can diffuse quickly and selectively oxidize in order to form a thick Al2O3 in the oxidation, which prevents any further oxidation. The system material is able to self-heal at high temperatures due to the microstructure between Ti3AlC2 & Ti2AlC & the Al2O3 that is generated. In a high-temperature setting, this oxide fills in the cracks or scratches on the material surface, restoring its original properties. This is a very important characteristic for materials to maintain their mechanical properties, and improve the stability and durability of the materials.
At high temperatures, the titanium aluminum carbide (Ti3AlC2 & Ti2AlC), due to its rapid Al diffusion & selective oxidation characteristics, can weld the material and between layers.
