What is Nitinol Nickel Titanium NiTi alloy powder ?
The excellent reactivity of Titanium and the strict control over composition make Nitinol extremely difficult for manufacture. Every atom that titanium combines with carbon or oxygen is an atom removed from the NiTi crystal lattice. This changes the composition of the metal and lowers its phase transition temperature. There are basically two melting methods.
Vacuum arc remelting (VAR)
This is done by creating an arc from the raw material to the copper strikeplate that has been water-cooled. The mold is copper, which is water-cooled. Melting is performed under high vacuum.
Vacuum induction melting (VIM)
It is done using an alternating magnet field to heat the raw material (usually carbon). It is done in a vacuum.
These two processes have their own advantages. However it has been shown that the VIM smelting method material is more fatigue resistant than the VART process. Some research studies have shown that using ultra-high purity plasticizers in raw materials can improve fatigue performance and reduce the number inclusions. Nitinol's high elasticity makes it relatively easy to work hot, but the cold is more difficult. The increased friction between the roller and the mold is a result of this. Grinding (abrasive-cutting), electrical discharge machine (EDM), and laser cutting all are relatively easy.
